How to own your week and make more room for the work you want to be doing.
I recently took a detour down the stationery aisle in Tesco.
I was supposed to be looking for cards, but I'm a sucker for a jazzy notebook promising to organise my life.
I've tried A LOT of productivity planners and diary hacks over the years. Most just haven't been built for the reality of back-to-back meetings and competing priorities โ and none have managed to protect the Friday morning 'thinking time' that slowly disappears with every "have you got five minutes today?" Teams notification.
And I know I'm not alone. One question I hear regularly from coaching clients is:
"How do I stop constantly firefighting and make time for the level of work I actually want to be doing?"
I've learned that the answer isn't always another productivity hack or finding more hours in the day.
It's getting clearer on something much more fundamental.
Where do I actually need to be?
Where does my experience, expertise or judgement genuinely make the biggest difference?
And once you start using those questions as a filter, you begin to see things differently in your week.
Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should still be the person doing it.
That fortnightly project meeting. The operational update you've always prepared. The problem everyone brings to you because you're brilliant at sorting it.
It's easy to keep doing these things because you've always done them or, frankly, it's quicker to sort them yourself.
But what is that leaving less room for?
What people see you doing shapes what they know you for โ and the opportunities they think of you for next.
So it's worth asking whether the things filling your week are helping you move towards the work you actually want to be doing.
I've made you a one-page tool to help you question a commitment, decide where your expertise is really needed and make one change that creates room for something better.
Your 10-minute weekly reset.

Find ONE commitment you've stopped questioning because it's always been there.
Ask yourself:
Now make ONE change.
Decline a meeting you don't need to attend, change how you contribute or start the conversation about doing things differently. Then use that space for something you want to move forward.
That's your 411. ๐
Wishing you a week with more space for the work you want to do, at the level you want to be known for.
